Being on, in and around the water is a way of life in Bermuda. However, it's important to remember that swimming, boating, diving and other watersports can be dangerous, too! Read on for tips to minimize risk and maximize fun in our beautiful Island waters.
Swimming
- Avoid swimming in inclement weather
- If caught in an undertow or current, keep calm and swim parallel to the shore
- If in difficulty while swimming, wave one arm back and forth slowly to attract attention while calling for help, avoid panicking
Diving
- Never dive alone
- Train with an experienced instructor
- Learn life saving techniques (and practice them)
Water Skiing
- Have two persons in the towing boat at all times
- Do not water ski within 200 feet of any foreshore
- Wear a life jacket or buoyant belt
Boating
- Always be aware of the weather and return to shore at any sign of trouble
- Keep your family and friends up to date on your plans
